It strikes me, reading how much Pericles clearly means to Boris, that he represents a venerable assumption about the Greeks & Romans that makes many classicists today deeply uncomfortable: that they shld serve as inspirations, not to study, but to action

Being inspired by the example of great men to attempt high-reaching feats oneself is, of course, a much more authentically classical response to reading about Pericles than writing about him in an academic journal.
(Although whether that is a good or bad thing is a quite different matter...)
