I was going to ignore the “Flown by Female pilot” caption was meant as a praise brigade but the spirit told me this could be a teaching moment. So I’ll explain why “Flown by Female Pilot” in the context of that tweet can never and would never be a form of praise. Issa THREAD.
First of all, we live in a society where a female is seen as weaker and less experienced form of any profession/professional. I know a good number of men would never sit down for a haircut from a lady barber regardless of how good at her job she might be.
I’ve worked with female drs who might have even been better drs than me and seen them referred to as “NURSE” while I was referred to as “DOCTOR” and then even be outrightly ignored by the patient even when they were leading the conversation. Mind you we were all dressed the same.
I’ve seen patients who wouldn’t allow a female doctor carry out any procedure on them and I’ve personally had to stand my ground and tell them she’s the only doctor you’re getting and if you’re not okay with that, then you can go treat yourself.
I’m no journalist but I can think of 2 maybe 3 different captions to describe that plane incident and the exceptional bravery and expertise of the pilot without mentioning the gender of the pilot.
Doing that only buttress the sexist notion that a female can never be as good as her male counterparts of any profession.
When a “MALE PILOT” crashes a plane, we don’t see headlines like “Boeing 737 flown by MALE PILOT crashes” so what makes it okay now? Exceptional Professionalism and Expertise knows no particular gender period!
The fact that you feel the need to point out that the pilot was a FEMALE sterns from the fact that you already have a preconceived notion or mentality that feats of extraordinary bravery and professionalism are UNCOMMON and UNNATURAL to females and that makes you sexist AF!
A PILOT IS A PILOT AND THERE ARE NO MALE OR FEMALE PILOTS! Oya Class dismissed! Go now re-enlightened and brighten the sexist/misogynistic corner near you.
