My parents moved out of Chennai to settle in kumbakonam 4 years ago. I was here three years ago with “more than I could handle” set of issues. I’m back 3 years later at ease with only one motive ‘RELAX’. Life here is a mix of the modern and orthodox.
My parents have adapted so easily probably because this is how it was while they were growing up, the current old style was the only style when they were young.
I was always the kitchen help, running errands everyday till my teens until board exams took over. She used to give me a wired bag to buy stuff and it was an involuntary action to pick it up while getting out. I don’t remember when I changed and carry bags literally blinded me.
I see that back in my house and it’s nostalgic like no other.
Back when I was young, we used to get bottled milk, and then it became the packeted aavin milk. Now milkman comes with those large aluminium cans and measuring cups. He pours it out into a vessel.
My mom calls it ‘vaasa pal’ (milk that comes to the door step). It is double filtered, boiled for consumption, fermented for curd, churned for butter and that is clarified to get ghee..
In one purchase she eliminated plastic of the milk, the curd, the butter and the ghee just like how it used to be but today it’s almost revolutionary. So many things that was the way of life is back now
She buys whole coconut, peels it with the iron peeling stand, uses the husk to wash vessels.
Saves the RO flush water, adds turmeric to make them safe for plants, to clean the vaasal in the morning before putting Kolam.
She saves the water used to soak grinder vessel post grinding and has a bucket for goats and cows to drink. All the vegetables waste is fed, especially banana peel is guarded to be fed and many more like these. It is almost unbelievable how my parents have no air about all this.
They are doing it like it should have been done all this while. The ban on plastic and the need to recycle not only helps the earth, it gets you to your roots and gives you feels like no other. #recycled #reuse #home #nostalgia
Now my kids as soon as they are done with breakfast will run to the gates to feed breakfast to the cows. My daughter says even cow has a tummy and its hungry. They feed the sides of bread and the first kutti dosa with kanji.
