When you use the term(s) or phrase(s): “crib”, “the crib”, “at the crib” and so on, we want you to remember Black and Brown sex workers who worked “cribs”/“crib houses” back in the day
Crib houses were originally small shack like dwellings (located mostly in low income areas) connected to one another for the sole purpose of erotic labor
these were small spaces (typically off of busy roads and streets) split into sections with room for a bed or cot, sink/washing area, and available for rent by the night or month (much like motels today)
associated with “quick and cheap” service, often times Black and Brown sex workers shut out of more lucrative, “respectable” locations found themselves in subdivisions like these or surrounding areas/locations
From the Dictionary of American Slang: (noun) a brothel, a cheap one, with small rooms available for prostitution
We understand there is coded language here (and throughout SWer history). Black and Brown SWers (cut off from “higher tier” spaces and establishments) are often considered “inferior” in particular areas, services, and price ranges.
considered “lowly”, “cheap”, “quick”, etc...
which adds to to the level of heavy policing, violence, and housing/financial insecurity faced in this particular demographic regarding sex work/erotic labor
