I want to amply a really good point that @michaeldweiss just made talking with @JoyAnnReid just now. People are worried about the Russians changing votes. That's the wrong thing to worry about. As Michael says, that's hard to do. But inducing paranoia and chaos? Much easier. /1
@michaeldweiss @JoyAnnReid All the Russians have to is enter a system, leave their footprints - which they will do intentionally - and make it clear that they were rummaging around, maybe altering voter data in the rolls. They'll do it and *want* us to know, so that we then doubt our election system. /2
All the Russians would want is for a state election commission to refuse to certify, even for a day. That would throw the election into chaos. Trump will claim victory or Deep State intervention, Fox and his usual courtesans will join in, and Putin will smile. /3
They don't have to change votes, which - again - is harder to do than just messing around in databases. They'll want Trump to do what he always does: attack our own institutions for his own emotionally disturbed reasons. They'll help him with that. /4
And, as @michaeldweiss noted, it could boomerang, and hurt Republicans as well when it becomes clear that the Russians were fucking around with voter data, and we all remember that #MoscowMitch refused to help harden the system. /5
The Republican obstruction of efforts to secure our elections is not only unwise, it is unpatriotic. The party of national security is now the party of Putin, and every Republican who doesn't fight for this - every single one - is complicit. /6x
