I’m going to lodge an expert dissent on this article, because I am tired of people talking only about the social manifestations of Trump as resembling fascism, but don’t think about the set of institutions, including parties, that were crucial to the rise of fascism. /1
For one thing, the United States is a huge, diverse federal system. Fascism requires the capture of a unitary state, and particularly its military organizations. 10 minutes of thinking this through should show you why this is nearly impossible in the United States. /2
I can already hear people yelling “it CAN happen here!“ sure. But you would have to have a catastrophic collapse of every state and local government in the United States. Maybe after a nuclear war. But not because Donald Trump and Bill Barr say so. /3
Could the United States government become an authoritarian government? One in constant struggle with state governments across the country? Yes. Decidedly yes. But fascism? Cool your jets, people. /4x
