Six months ahead of the Iowa caucuses, @mviser finds voters with real concerns about the man leading the nationwide Democratic polls. Their quotes about @JoeBiden are critical, but reflect what we all have been able to witness for ourselves thus far. wapo.st/2KpUPIe
“Gee, it was nice he was vice president. However, he is not vice president now, and if he wants to stand out, he has to do it soon, on his own two feet,” said one retired teacher, who added: “I want to know what he thinks, not what he did with Obama. That’s why I’m here.”
Later, @mviser observed the same retired teacher as she watched the former Vice President speak in Iowa. “But Biden’s appearance that evening evidently did not convince her: Halfway through, she took out her phone and began playing a card game.”
“Adding to the Democrats’ nervousness is that a clear alternative has yet to emerge,” @mviser notes, observing that Harris and Sanders have struggled to maintain momentum and doubts linger about the appeal of Warren’s policies in a general election.
One quote from @mviser’s report truly disturbed me. Admitting her reservations about him, one county chairwoman said of Biden, “I just want Republicans to be able to feel comfortable and vote for him.” Those folks voted for a white nationalist last time. Don’t give them comfort.
Yes, Trump is the worst. So vet the candidates so that you have the best possible opportunity to defeat him. That, to me, is the evidence that you are taking Trump’s threat seriously. Not “we’ll just take any candidate.” Do not forsake your critical thinking for party allegiance.
