Nearly 2 yrs ago, I wrote about Alireza, a gay Iranian man trying to resettle in the US but who had been blocked repeatedly by Trump admin's changes to US refugee policy. Today, I got word that he + his partner were just resettled in Portland, after nearly 5 yrs stuck in Turkey

This strategy - keeping things quiet in hopes of brokering a diplomatic deal - is a common response to Iran's practice of arresting academics, journalists, tourists and others with foreign and dual nationalities.
We found that Iranian authorities often make promises of quick release - if only family members keep quiet.

Three times in 2018, @DeptVetAffairs had a chance to weigh in on an expansive Trump immigration policy and argue for an exemption for veterans. Each time, it declined to do so. My latest, with @iarnsdorf and @dlind propublica.org/article/emails…

As one who attended Catholic grade school all 6 years, I had the Bible and Jesus' words drilled into my brain. What the zealot "Christians" are espousing as religious values on people who are "different" than you - immigrants, LGBTQ, etc. - is a far departure from The Word.

Trump admin is enforcing a new asylum policy today. Here's what it does:

-Refugees & border-crossers seeking asylum based on fear of domestic or gang violence will be immediately rejected
-Asylum seekers w/ legitimate fears of persecution will be rejected if they cross illegally
This defies international law, which states that asylum claims are valid even when a person enters a country illegally (because finding a legal entry point is generally lower on the priority list than NOT DYING).

Re. the Trump admin's new asylum policy: "When you put it all together, this is his grand scheme to just close any possibility for people seeking protection — legally — to claim that protection that they can under the law."
