Gospel: Today Jesus is rejected after preaching in the synagogue in his hometown of Nazareth (Mt 13: 54-8). Usually preachers focus on the fact that those closest to him were unable to see his true identity. And they often draw the (correct) parallel that we are often blind...
...to God in front of us. But a few years ago on retreat it dawned on me that Jesus must have known how the people would react when he, in essence, proclaimed himself as Messiah. After all, Nazareth was a small town, 200 to 400 people, and he knew them well. So how was he able...
....to stand up and preach, most likely knowing that they would reject him? Because Jesus was free of the need to be loved, like or even approved of by the people in Nazareth, and even by his own extended family, who elsewhere say he is "out of his mind..."
Jesus was supremely free. Free to do the Father's will. The freedom from the need to be loved or liked is a good grace to pray for.
