I note both on twitter and in real life the remain v no-deal divide is only becoming more entrenched, which we're going to suffer from because if there's one area you really need some cross-party consensus it is international economic policy - otherwise investors won't come... 1/
Current Government policy - deal with US, no deal with EU. So investors who want preferential access to the US market could build here. Except that the opposition policy is deal with EU, no-deal with US. On that basis you're going to wait (see car industry...) 2/
Now if we think 50% of the population are likely to remain supportive of close relations with / membership of the EU, and 50% will not (for argument's sake), those in the first group will inevitably win one day... but this then becomes zero sum politics 3/
Those who want to leave with no-deal believe that 50% remainers / close relationship will then change their minds. Which seems as frankly unlikely as the opposite happening. At which point rather than unity we're split for quite a while... 4/
The May Government deepened the split inherited from Cameron but at some point realised this was untenable and tried to find a deal. Didn't do a very good job of it. Johnson's Government seem to have come down firmly for no-deal, deepening the split 5/
Chances at the moment are we may well leave with no-deal causing economic damage only to accept a remarkably similar deal in the future - which would obviously be completely economically irresponsible. But no-dealers don't obviously care and want to win at any cost... 6/
Until a Government manages to find a long term compromise as we had until 2016 (not everyone needs to be happy, but a broad majority) then we can't move on from international relations dominating politics and economics in the UK 7/
The only consolation is that if you live outside the UK you've suddenly discovered why compromise on such matters is essential to avoid economic and political paralysis. (debatable for the US, but we can return to that...). Not much consolation here though.. 8/ end
PS I'm going out walking the hills shortly, so won't sadly be able to reply to the inevitable replies that either say "just revoke" or "we voted to leave". Which is probably all for the best
