Public safety begins with public health. As I’ve long made clear, we cannot arrest our way out of a health and resource crisis. People who suffer from homelessness, substance use disorder, or mental illness are not debris; they cannot be “swept” away. 1/
Investing resources in evidence-based solutions isn’t just the right thing to do; it’s the smart thing to do. Clearing the streets will not clear up the underlying problems, and in the end will cost us more money and more lives. 2/
I am meeting with leaders from the @BOSUsersUnion, @BHCHP, and other substance use and mental health agencies to begin the work of implementing lasting change. 3/
To be clear, the individuals responsible for the August 1st attack of a Suffolk County corrections officer will be held accountable. They, however, do not reflect the overwhelming population of people in that area who are seeking treatment, services and help. 4/
I will continue to use the power of my position as your District Attorney to fight for resources and treatment for members of our community who are at risk, in crisis or struggling. They are worth it. 5/5
