THREAD-"While Donald Trump attempts to use the El Paso and Dayton massacres to supercharge his anti-immigrant agenda, Republicans are breaking Senate rules to institutionalize xenophobia and hate.
"Sen. Lindsay Graham just abused his power as chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee to jam through a racist anti-asylum bill straight out of Stephen Miller's white nationalist playbook.
"The Secure and Protect Act would ban Central American refugees from seeking asylum at the border, permit the federal government to jail children and families indefinitely and expand the Trump regime's already well-oiled deportation machine.
"Since taking office, the Trump administration has signed several anti-immigrant executive orders and directives in an effort to bypass Congress.
"From the Muslim ban to the repeal of DACA and TPS to expanding expedited removal throughout the country, it is clear that this administration is abusing its power to threaten the dignity and safety of immigrants.
"While these actions have been routinely challenged in court, the Republican-controlled Senate is launching another set of attacks to codify into law Trump's racism and xenophobia.
"Republicans are so desperate to strip away asylum and humanitarian protections for refugees... Graham broke the rules of his own committee to jam through the Secure and Protect Act without giving Democratic members time to voice opposition or include amendments.
"Graham's hateful bill would destroy the very fabric of the country's immigration system, close our borders and fill up U.S. concentration camps. The most damaging provisions of the act include:
1. Ban Central American refugees from applying for asylum.
2. Permit the Department of Homeland Security to detain children with their parents in family detention centers indefinitely.
3. Amend the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008 to force unaccompanied children to prove they would be harmed if deported – a higher standard than what is applied to adults.
4. Limit access to due process and fair legal representation for asylum seekers.
5. Give immigration officers the power to immediately deport unaccompanied children.
