TL:DR? Brexiters always omit "of the peoples of Europe[...] in accordance with subsidiarity". This COMPLETELY REVERSES the meaning.
Subsidiarity means NOT transferring any powers that are workable at a national level.
Subsidiarity means ONLY outsourcing to the EU those powers that are not workable at a national level - that MUST be cross-border. (Eg you can't have France setting one tariff for Brazillian sugar and the UK setting a different one - that would be insane.)
When Brexiters cite the phrase "Ever closer union" as evidence of a "Superstate" end-game, they are LYING.
Deliberately, barefacedly, lying. Turning a clause that OPPOSES unnecessary transfer of powers to the EU into something that appears to say the opposite.
In 2013 HMG launched a massive Whitehall study iiea.com/brexit/the-cur… to identify areas where too much power had been transferred.
TL:DR? Chairman, Lord Boswell said of the 32 reports: "there was not one in which it was demonstrated that too much power resided in Brussels."
The study:
Lasted 3 years
Took 1500 submissions
Produced 32 reports
Ran to 3000 pages
Cost £5M
... Was slipped out quietly by the Tory Gov and never used in the referendum campaign. theguardian.com/world/2015/mar…
Here are the 32 reports: gov.uk/guidance/revie…
So the first time any brexiter tries the "ever closer union" line on you, please say "I am afraid you are mistaken" and send them this thread.
After that - the 2nd time they use it - say: "Why are you LYING? You have been put straight on this already."
