What happened next is that a more progressive alternative (Dean) surged in popularity and then lost the “electability” argument inside the party to Kerry, after Lieberman proved to be simply too boring, coasting off the fumes of 2000.
The Lieberman 2003/Biden 2019 parallels are pretty compelling IMHO. Lieberman was the ghost of the Democratic Party past. Dean pointed forward toward Obama in 2008.
Ugh, my blurry morning eyes misread the Gallup headline. Bush did not seem “easy to beat,” but he did look “beatable.”
