Another ridiculous and embarrassing day for the press. The requirement that an immigrant not become a "public charge," which Burnett is suggesting is un-American, is part of the Immigration and Nationality Act. That law goes all the way back to 1891.
The media has spent the day pretending that a poem is binding law and the actual law does not exist.

That law was in place when my escaped the Soviet Union and came here with less than $200 in 1989. It does not mean America does not offer opportunity to poor people.
As mentioned earlier, the new rules do expand what it means to be a public charge and give immigration authorities more leverage in that determination. They do not violate some mythical standard regarding immigrating here.

I had a friend say something very similar in my DM's so I didn't want to copy it, but exactly this. The journalists who spent all day bringing up the poem are embarrassing themselves.

I will note that Ken Cuccinelli did not help himself with his NPR response adjusting the poem. But him being unable to persuasively defend the rule does not justify reporters ignoring all the facts related to immigration raws to spin an emotional narrative against the rule.
