These guys can't get basic facts right, which is why they avoid debating substantive topics and instead have to distort what their political opponents believe and say.
If I intentionally cut the quote of a major figure on the left in half or lied about what they said and my tweet went viral, I would get a ton of pushback. When someone like Josh Marshall does it, he gets a bunch of retweets from mainstream journalists with large platforms.
That's the problem. There are no consequences for lying about people on the right because the attitude is that "they are bad so it's ok to lie about them".

As for Shapiro, he gets it worse because the alt-right also hates him so they are eager to spread/join in the smears.
