Allow me a thread. We have some damn incredible people in our sport and in the communities we race in. We just do. And it doesn’t take chaotic, scary, life-changing moments to see it, but wow do these damn incredible people deliver when they do.
We have damn incredible police officers who showed immense grace to a fella who broke a whole bucketload of traffic laws (on two separate pull-overs) as he drove like Bo Duke to catch a flight to Johnson City.
We have damn incredible media professionals who showed considerable compassion while pursuing information on a friend and colleague. And to be honest, most of them really just wanted confirmation that the Earnhardts were OK.
We have damn incredible industry professionals working for our race teams — particularly at Hendrick Motorsports — who stepped up in ways that would blow your mind. If I told you one particular act of kindness, you’d think I’m making it up.
We have damn incredible first responders working in our communities, and damn incredible every-day citizens who have hearts of gold and a mighty American spirit.
We have damn incredible people like Jerry Caldwell, president at Bristol Motor Speedway, who handled even the most trivial requests with swiftness and sincerity... as if he didn’t have the enormity of his biggest event weekend upon him.
We have damn incredible drivers — no, friends — like Jimmie Johnson and Ryan Blaney. Say a cross word about either of ‘em and I’ll fight you.
We have damn incredible people at NASCAR. We just do — top to bottom. They are saints, and I’m not sure we tell them enough. Actually, we don’t at all. You know what we do? Complain. All the time. I’m gonna try to do less of that.
We have damn incredible fans. You guys. You’re amazing. On The Dale Jr Download a few weeks ago we gave Dale a hard time for reading Twitter while broadcasting a race. But I know why he does it — he cares about what you think, and he wants you to be happy. You’re worth it.
We work with incredible people at NBC Sports. Start with Sam Flood, who I’m convinced would’ve banned Dale from the booth to force him to take the weekend. And how about Letarte, who met Dale at the hospital and made a critical Walmart run for items for Isla. Find a better pal.
To all the damn incredible drivers, crew chiefs, team guys, media members, track workers, old friends, new friends, strangers, etc., who sent emails, text messages, tweets, letters, voice mails, balloons, cards, food, etc... you’re amazing.
Lastly, I work for a damn incredible family man who has a damn incredible wife and a damn incredible sister. And, gracious, this family take hits like nothing I’ve ever seen.
