My "Top 20" insights over the past year on views toward women and equality. It's been quite a year! #womensequalityday #WomensEqualityDay2019
1) A majority of likely 2020 voters think gender equality has NOT yet been achieved. The exception: 77% of Republican men who say we've made it.
2) 40% of Republican men voters say it's "true" or are not sure whether "Most women get their periods at the first of the month." (We asked this Q to better understand people's knowledge in light of the recent 6-week abortion bans)
3) 47% of women 2020 voters feel angry, scared, nervous, or sad about the state of women's rights and equality.
4) Most 2020 voters are more likely to think President Trump has made things worse, rather than better, for women.
5) See responses from an open-ended survey question among voters - free association word exercise between "President Trump and women":
6) Most voters do not think it's a good time in America to be a woman of color, immigrant woman, Muslim woman, or LBT woman.
7) The face of feminism today is a popular, mainstream Black woman: @MichelleObama.
8) The Kavanaugh/Ford testimonies last fall had a big impact on voters. They made a majority of key voting blocs think about "Men having more power in government than women." In our regression analysis, this perception predicted voting Dem in the 2018 midterms.
9) This year, the major cultural moment related to gender equality is around the recent abortion bans. Data suggest these are on par with last year's Kavanaugh/Ford hearings - sparking millions of conversations and thoughts about the state of women's rights in our country.
10) Not surprisingly, the abortion bans motivated Dems and abortion rights supporters more than their counterparts.
11) But, surprisingly, analysis suggests that abortion positions are very linked with views toward gender equity. Anti-abortion voters have very different views toward women than pro-choice voters.
12) We typically find that Republican men are the segment most likely to have inegalitarian views. But it actually may be anti-abortion voters. Here's a look within Republicans by abortion views.
13) Think women presidential candidates aren't likable? Think again. vox.com/policy-and-pol…
14) We're starting to see Republican women move toward thinking men and women are EQUALLY good political leaders (from men are better), while Democrats are moving toward thinking WOMEN are better leaders. I would not not have seen these data four years ago:
15) It starts young. Guess who is most likely to think sexism is a "big problem" in our society? Adolescent girls ages 14 to 19. This might be why: 7 in 10 girls feel unsafe as a girl and judged as a sexual object in their daily lives.
16) Boys' #1 pressure from society: Be strong, physically tough. Be willing to punch someone.
17) Sexual comments from dads and other male family members matter. (47% of boys have heard these comments from male family members; 29% from their dad).
18) Party affiliation of parents matter.
19) Toys matter (!).
20) (Girls') sports matter. We're also doing interviews with boys right now who think girls "only do gymnastics" and "boys are better at sports" - because they don't see girls' sports as visibly. (@DrSportPsych I want to chat!) @LynxCoachReeve 👏
Survey of 1,912 likely 2020 voters July 3 through July 14, 2019, using YouGov’s panel
@MichelleObama Survey of 1,912 likely 2020 voters 7/19. Obama tops list at 43% who feel she "represent[s] feminism or gender equality today." Next: Oprah (37%), Warren (35%), Bader-Ginsburg (33%), Clinton (32%), Harris (32%), AOC (31%), Pelosi (28%) Serena (27%), Gloria Steinem (23%)....
