Black barbershops are a cesspool of ignorance, misogyny, homophobia, toxic masculinity, political incorrectness.. a place for cis black men to talk shop and be problematic and as a socially conscious black gay man I refuse support them any further!!
Why are gay men such a hot topic for cis black men? I’m at the barbershop and they were discussing this beauty/body waxing place next door and how they wish they could be a fly on the wall (which is predatory and disgusting in its self)
Then they start talking about a gay man that works there referring to him as “the fruity” and re affirming that problematic ass idea that cis men have that all gay men are attracted to every man saying “you don’t want the fruity waxing you”
Then another barber refers to that said black men as “the fag” then proceeds to keep referring to him as faggot. “It’s a fag that works there, gotta watch him” and I lost it!
I’ve been coming to this barbershop since i was a kid so I’ve never made it a notion to come out or discuss my sexuality here. Just get my haircut and keep it pushing.
And i walked outside and burst into tears. I’m so tired. Sooo tired of dealing with this shit. This lack of regard and respect for black queer lives by cis black men. I’m so tired.
That’s why black queer spaces are so VITAL!!
I’m tired of standing up for cis black men when there is such a lack of regard or respect for us. When Tyrone or Devon dies to senseless gun violence or police brutality I speak their names loudly but if one of us were to die to similar circumstances, I’m the fruity
It’s so hard feeling like an outsider in a community that you’re so attached to. I am a black man first and i can’t even exist in that world
I’m so comfortable in my skin,in my queerness, in my blackness and i REFUSE to be uncomfortable anywhere!
It’s not even just them using slurs to refer to a gay black man that got 2 me it’s also the fact that they reduced that black man down to solely his sexuality.. like that’s all he is. Like we go around referring to straight men as simply “straights”
