It *is* weird a pulp fantasy noir focusing on racial injustice in an urban setting launched during a content glut doesn't match up with a Dark Ages-set War of the Roses launched by the highest profile cable network nine years ago in a completely different media landscape.
I may be tempting fate as a guy running a show listed in the "Is This the Next Game of Thrones?" articles, but we should be comparing apples to apples, and we do a very fine show like CARNIVAL ROW a disservice by faulting it for not doing something it was never designed to do.
I've been doing this for twenty-four years now. I was there when every SEINFELD writer got a giant deal and never made another SEINFELD, and every FRIENDS writer got a giant deal and never made another FRIENDS. Remember all those super-successful LOST knock-offs?
Every hit TV show is a weird blend of talent and marketplace timing and marketing and sheer, unadulterated luck. *Almost entirely luck*. Hollywood hates to admit how much of our business is luck because that would make 80% of the jobs go away.
