In this piece, Barnier declares that the purpose of the backstop is to create a "fully open" Irish border. But we never wanted an open border & that border shld not be open. What we sought was a soft border - which is a completely different thing. telegraph.co.uk/politics/2019/…
We do not need a Withdrawal Agreement Treaty & we never did. We do not need - & never should have sought - the EU's permission to leave.
Barnier is totally disingenuous claiming the backstop changes nothing abt NI's constitutional status. The WA's a draft international Treaty declaring the UK no longer sovereign over NI's key economic laws! How much more change than that cld one need in order to count as a change!
FPS! The WA literally splits the UK into two sovereign areas, by Treaty: "UK(GB)" & "UK(NI)". Yet Barnier has the nerve to claim it changes nothing abt NI's constitutional status!
Barnier also declares: "Many people in the UK understand that and I would be surprised if they succumb to the idea that the EU is to blame for a difficult political situation in the UK." Thus the only qstn for the EU now is: "Who gets the blame." No chance of a deal any more.
