Don't be misled by Amazon hype:

- Earth has *re-forested* over last 35 years
- Forest cover *increased* area the size of Texas & Alaska combined
- There's was huge (25%) *decline* in land area burned 2003-19

None of this means everything's fine. It's not. But we do a disservice when we ignore the good news and exaggerate the bad.

Our goal should be to understand the positives for people & nature — urbanization, agricultural productivity, reforestation — so we can do more of them.

In Germany, the world leader in renewables, just 35 wind turbines were installed this year. The country needs to install 1,400 per year to meet its climate change targets.

The halting of wind deployment in Germany has resulted in the industry shedding 25,000 jobs. And it’s not clear Germany can handle more wind.

Its grid operator increasingly has to cut off electricity from industrial wind farms on windy, low-demand days, to avoid blow-outs.

Endangered species law & grassroots resistance have halted growth of German wind energy

Three and a half years ago I started Environmental Progress with the goal of saving nuclear power from oblivion.

The first nuclear plant we sought to save was the one in my home state: Diablo Canyon...
Over the years, people have asked me why we kept fighting for it.

My answer was always the same. "Because I believe we are going to save it. I just don't happen to know exactly how, at the moment."
Then, its owner, Pacific Gas & Electric went bankrupt. Lawsuits filed because of the company's role in sparking deadly wildfires racked up billions in fines the company couldn't afford.

I’d spent the day planting and watering seedlings, which I’ve done for half a decade now. We have 300 acres on the north slope of Volcan Mountain, between Julian and Warner Springs. The property got hit by the Pines Fire in 2002, which killed two-thirds of the conifers.
