I track State level campaign finance in Texas. Over the past three years, I've captured pretty much all of it, in every race (right from the TEC site). There is definitely something going on in 17 Texas House districts. #txlege

1/ Five years ago today, #SandraBland was found dead in a rural Texas jail cell. Legislation sparked by the outrage over her death was mostly stripped of racial profiling and police reform measures before the #txlege passed it.

Here’s where things stand.
2/ Bland, a 28-year-old Black woman, was found dead in an apparent suicide at the Waller County Jail three days after she was arrested during a routine traffic stop.
3/ Dashboard camera footage disproved the state trooper’s stated reason for arresting her — assault on a public servant — and showed him threatening to drag her out of her car and use a Taser on her after she refused to put out a cigarette.

Whatever can be said of Texas politics in 2020, the state is about to undergo an accelerating demographic shift that will see it add a net 630k non-white voters by 2022 and a net 1.3 million non-white voters by 2024. #txlege
By contrast, Texas will add only 142k additional white voters between now & 2022 and only 286k between now & 2024 (Texas’ white pop is growing too but older Texans are disproportionately white meaning that deaths offset much of white pop growth). #txlege 2/
Obviously, the potential ramifications are huge. Not only for Texas but the nation. For one thing, it would be *really* hard (and maybe impossible) for Republicans to put together a map to the White House without Texas. #txlege 3/

Gov @GregAbbott_TX doing round of noon TV interviews... first up he's live in East Texas where he's asked what keeps him up at night. Says it's that COVID-19 spreading more rapidly..main thing I need is to make sure people wear masks. "COVID is real, it hasn't gone away"
On law enf saying they won't enforce order- Abbott calls that "disappointing" as a Longview native... He understands it's "not top priority" compared to murders, rapists, criminals... But last thing any govt wants is for area to shut down...

Having read the #TEA #texas Return to school guidelines, I have a few questions. #txlege @antraasa

Students will wash their hands while supervised, twice a day. How is that going to happen TEA?…
If a teacher is exposed to a sick child, that teacher must go into 14 day quarantine.

Is that paid leave? Will the teacher still work while at home? Does that cost sick days?

If the teacher returns and is soon exposed to another child, 14 days of quarantine again?
Staff is responsible for self-testing temperature each day.

Who will monitor that activity to ensure compliance?

In live TV interview, Gov @GregAbbott_TX tells San Antonio station his restrictions are "best practices" to slow spread. Data should be an "alarm bell" for anyone who is a "disbeliever" in the "rapid spread of #COVID19" in Texas.

On biz finding loopholes for Abbott's orders re" rafting etc, he says it's more the buses transporting ppl, not so much the actual acts of rafting. Says state will learn more about how casual raft use impacts cases based on his halting tubing for now
#txlege #coronavirus #COVID19
Key word for #txed this year is "flexibility" Abbott says. Working with TEA on mask usage, and says if his orders change by the time school starts, school districts will need to adapt.

For 4 years, I've steadfastly avoided politics on this page. If I am annoying some of you by starting in on #maskmandates today, I am truly sorry. But this is bigger than the #masks vs. no masks or lockdown vs. no lockdown questions. This is about WHO GETS TO DECIDE. /1 #COVID19
Will "We the People" govern ourselves? Or do we now live in a world where one person can declare an emergency that gives the same individual authority over every last aspect of our lives for an indefinite period of time? /2 #COVID19
Will "We the People" hold honest debates through our state legislatures, allowing us to hear BOTH sides of any given issue? Or does one person get to choose the expert that we are "allowed" to believe? /3 #COVID19

Just two weeks ago, Governor Abbott said it was wrong to mandate citizens to wear masks. Today, he decreed all persons must wear masks or be punished with a $250 fine per occurrence. (1/3) #txlege
If you are driving with anyone not in your household in a vehicle, and you don’t wear a mask, you will be punished. This is absurd. Governor Abbott threatened that if Texans don’t comply he might shut down more businesses. (2/3)
Unless the Governor is willing to call a special session, as I and other legislators have requested, he bears the responsibility for all outcomes. Please know that I am and have been fighting to stop this madness. (3/3)

If your leadership had been worth a single goddamn, @GovAbbott, you wouldn’t need to bankrupt our hospitals to save lives! Suspending elective surgeries without closing bars and restaurants!?! I’m LIVID.…
Elective surgeries are the only moneymakers. Take them away, and hospitals operate in the red. #Texas medical professionals have already lost their jobs or had their pay cut. Why not allow elective surgeries that don’t require an overnight stay? This will be devastating.
And for a governor who pushes local control over all else, why don’t you get out of the way and let our local leaders make our choices. You have failed. Miserably. Step aside. Houston’s got this. @LinaHidalgoTX @HarrisCoJudge @SylvesterTurner @houmayor @AbbieKamin @RodneyEllis

Here's what's going on with plenty of availability of general beds, too.

#Texas has 2nd most recoveries in nation & 2nd lowest case fatality rate. @DavidBalatHC

#Texas is responsibly phasing out shutdown, but some are spreading fear & wanting people locked down. #txlege

BUT plenty of bed availability & deaths remain subdued--key metrics.

I’d like to talk about voting by mail in Texas (a thread). As someone who crunches election numbers and maintains a file of all voters in the state, I have some issues with sending everyone a ballot like some other states do (or are suggesting). (1/x) #txlege
While the registration rolls are pretty accurate, there are still issues with multiple records and records with bad information.

Example #1: Until last year, I had a friend who was registered in both Travis and Dallas Counties. Would he have receive two ballots? (2/x)
Example #2: I purchased my house in May 2016. Since then, I have received voter registration cards (twice) for the previous owner. As of today, he is still listed as an active voter at my address. Would I receive his ballot? (3/x)
