Being autistic to me, means having a spiky skills & abilities profile. I can struggle with “simple” or new tasks, doing well with complex tasks, in my areas of expertise. It also means people are constantly over or underestimateing me. #ActuallyAutistic
I’m good with writing, mostly because anxiety drives me to second guess every word I type out.

However, I struggle to keep pace/follow back & forth communication. There is no time for me to compose my words.

I’m great at public speaking, if I have had time to write and memorize my presentation.

I can monologue, on & on. . .

It’s other people’s interruptions that get me off track. “When is it my turn to talk? Now? Now? Now? Oops - I forgot what I waned to say.”

I’m really focused on my hobbies. I become an expert in anything that I love, even obscure things of little value other than bringing me extreme joy & relaxation.

So focused on my passion projects that I neglect my friends & family. I isolate myself, because solitude is bliss.
Anxiety makes me avoid things. Makes me want to run.

My interests ground me. Give me purpose and drive.

I avoid the word, because it has been unkind to me & my intense emotions.

The lights hurt my brain & modern life can be completely overwhelming.
I live a non-traditional life.

I work from home, so I can avoid modern buildings whenever possible.

Home is in an RV. A more affordable way to live. In a small space, allowing me to spend more time recovering in nature.

Small spaces are also easier to clean. 😇

Anxiety tells you horrible things and makes you believe you are not worthy of love, even your own.
You may have feelings of self hatred or that you don’t even deserve basic comforts like food, rest, or love.

Dressed as Misty from Pokémon at a convention, I met a boy who started happily telling me about Pokémon and the sounds they make. I was enjoying his enthusiasm when his mother apologized to me, letting me know he was autistic. “It’s okay me too! Never apologize for that!” I said.
When people apologized for me growing up people said things like “she’s rude” or “she doesn’t know when to stop talking”. . .
Nobody knew I was #ActuallyAutistic so everyone assumed is should have known better. I didn’t.

I’m really tired of fighting in the #ActuallyAutistic advocacy community.

Let’s all work together and support each other in our goals instead of tearing each other apart for approaching situations differently.

This. “If you don’t advocate my way” BS needs to stop.
There is no enemy, only ignorance. Let’s put our energy into fighting THAT not each other #ActuallyAutistic

Lack of empathy is often seen by the neurotypical community as *the* big indicator of autism. Thus, popular ideas of autism veer towards 'robots', 'cyborgs' and 'psychopaths'. No wonder there are so many problems when actual autistic people dare to be autistic in public /2
I frequently see #autistic people questioned about their autism because they understood empathy. Of course we understand empathy. We feel it too. /3

#ActuallyAutistic people, like myself and many others, are spoken for - a lot. We often find ourselves without the ability to speak freely.

Not because of our own difficulties, but because we are spoken over. And ignored.

This can be small-scale, like at home...
...or large scale. Like providing a platform for people who aren't autistic to talk about autism.

I'm also bisexual. You wouldn't invite a straight person to talk about LGBT+ stuff, would you?
