The chicken thing is pure panic from the Tories. Plan A failed. Plan B is failing. They don't have a Plan C.
Where the possible plan Cs for the Government?

Option 1: ask the EU for an extension and then have their election.

Sane but has the unfortunate by-product of any sane action of significantly boosting the Brexit Party's vote.
Option 2: wait until the 20th October and refuse to sign the bill.

Has the plus side of showing true commitment to Brexit but the downside of risking arrest, blowing up our constitution and being no confidenced with Corbyn probably put in place to ask for the extension.
Option 3: resign once sure that Parliament will not agree to an election under any mechanism.

This would likely mean Corbyn became PM, secured the extension and then called an election.
The major downside is that it gives Corbyn the credibility of the PM role but the plus side is it makes him clear leader of remain aiding the election campaign in leave marginals.

It also might push LD votes in Tory/LD marginals back to Labour.
So remarkably if I was advising Johnson *fully body shudder* I'd be telling him to resign once all options to secure an election next week had been exhausted.
James Forsyth is close to Cummings and Gove so this column seems to confirm No 10 is thinking along the lines above thesun.co.uk/news/9881074/e…
