“Labor force participation increased, rising to 63.2% tying its highest level since August 2013. The total number of Americans considered employed surged by 590,000 to a record 157.9 million.” Wages are up a healthy 3.2% for the year, which continues to drive consumer spending.
August jobs numbers came in “less than expected.” While the headline unemployment rate remained at 3.7%, 130,000 jobs were created last month. It’s pretty tough to improve upon full employment, which even Reuters admitted back in 2017 when the headline unemployment rate was 4.7%

If we don’t massively raise taxes, if we don’t impose onerous regulations on businesses and your personal life, if we don’t spend incomprehensible amounts of money… we’re all going to die in 12 years.
The left has been telling us for decades that we only have 12 years left. The longer this goes on, the more shrill it gets and the more it wants to make your life miserable.

The Left has been working for over 50 years now to bring about the collapse of the family, knowing it would bring about the moral collapse of the nation. If it were not true, why have they gone to such great lengths to re-write history and change the past?
They have been playing the long game for years, especially in dumbing down our education system to the point where feelings are more important than facts. It’s time for us to wake up to this deception or we will suffer the fate of every other society that crumbled from within.

First up: Monthly growth slowed a bit in August, but the six-month average actually ticked up slightly.
Bigger picture: Hiring has slowed meaningfully from last year, but the durability has been impressive (107-straight months!).
Census hiring added 25k jobs, so private hiring was weaker. No question that job growth has slowed.

Marianne Bertrand’s talk was great, made even more great because she’s got an excellent speaking style interjected with slight humor and magnetism. The talk mainly focused on the stubbornness of the gender gap in earnings.
The increase in female labor force participation is well documented, but what’s interesting is that while women are almost half the employed population, they’re relatively rare among top earners.
This appears partly when you examine the gender gap within occupation. Notice how for the wealthiest jobs, the gender gap gets larger.

Some thoughts on this week's WaPo op-ed on welfare reform by @sanfordschram @rfording and @jbsoss . Per usual, let me stipulate that I think welfare reform was a success because it reduced poverty, which is the thing we all profess to care about. /1
There are 6 points the authors make. #1 is that caseload reduction is the wrong metric for success. I agree with that, and most conservative reformers would agree with that too. (I know most of the most prominent ones personally.) But... /2
The authors punt big-time on this when they say that a better metric would be what happened to earnings from employment. I'm not sure they want to go here, but at any rate, they don't. They leave this dangling as if we just don't know the answer. We do. /3
