These facts can’t be unspun:

1) @NWSBirmingham was right when it said Sept. 1 that Alabama “will NOT see any impacts from #Dorian”.

2) @realDonaldTrump was wrong Sept. 1 for saying AL “will most likely be hit (much) harder than anticipated”

1) @NWSBirmingham link: bit.ly/2LqNffu

2) @realDonaldTrump link: bit.ly/2LwLUnI

3) @NOAA (politburo): bit.ly/2LBixQY
3/8 @NOAA’s statement is right that @NWSBirmingham spoke in “absolute terms that were inconsistent with probabilities from the best forecast products available at the time”

But so did the President & then some. Ultimately he was wrong & NWS was right. @noaa is silent about that
4/8 So what was the probability, on the Sept. 1 morning, that tropical-storm force winds could hit Alabam? 5-10%, & only in the extreme SE corner of the state

But president said @ the time that Alabama will be “must likely be hit (much) harder” than anticipated. False.
5/8 What do folks in Alabama who know what they’re talking about say? Here’s the state’s best-known weatherman: @spann

He said @NWSBirmingham was right

6/8 Even weather scientists who are viewed by conservatives with less suspicion (when compared to their counterparts) have no problem with @NWSBirmingham’s tweet
7/8 And here’s more background on what the forecasts did and did not say politi.co/2LB5tLl
8/8 No 1’s faulting the president for a well-intentioned safety warning. But he was wrong, @NWSBirmingham was right & his decision to doctor a forecast chart & falsely claim it was “orginal” —followed by @noaa’s politburo-like disavowal — made his small error into a bigger story
