I'm beginning to believe that some are intentionally, willfully stupid. Let's go back to, say, 2008. The GOP decided to foist upon the electorate someone who, while having served admirably under fire, was a POS as a politician.
Many, including me, said "screw you, GOP" and we were tut-tutted by so many of our "betters", who instructed us to not throw a tantrum and to be an adult and vote for McCain anyway.
We were, many times, instructed to vote for even a shit sandwich, assuming said sandwich had an "R" after its name. The right-leaning side of the voting spectrum put up with this nonsense for a great many years.
Fast forward to 2016, when the actual GOP voters chose Trump as the nominee. Immediately, the same group of tut-tutters said "No way I'm voting for this buffoon."
Voters: But you said vote Shit Sandwich - R. Eat this.
Voters: But you said vote Shit Sandwich - R. Eat this.
Tut-Tutters: No no no, this is different.
Voters: Why?
Tut-Tutters: Because we're better and smarter and you have to do what we tell you, but we can piss on you whenever we want.

And yet far too many simply pretend to not understand just how deep and abiding the anger the voters have for our self-styled "betters" is.

Yes, I get it: just one more article saying how effing stupid the voters are will certainly sway them to your cause. Or, and I'm just spitballing here, more and more people will simply tune you out, not even bothering to waste time mocking you.
