My Step Into Reading book “I Love My Tutu!” pubs today. Oddly, I was inspired to write it after reading Evelyn Waugh’s novel “Vile Bodies”, about a pack of posh Brits in the 1920s. To explain:
In the novel, one wry character uses the expression “Too, too much!” to express delight, and “too, too” made me think of “tutu”. I wondered if I could find a way to use the phrase “tutu, too”, which felt extra-silly, and this story is the result.
What I like about writing leveled readers is that the strict rules make it like a puzzle to solve: Short, simple sentences. Easy vocab that can be sounded out. Words and actions that can all be found in the art, to help decode a word. And repetition. Lots of repetition.
The repetition is the most fun part of writing them: How can I use repetition to reinforce learning but not make it . . . repetitive? That’s where “too” and “tutu” came in, silly repetition to show how similar sounds can come from different letters.
It’s been too, too much tutu fun! rhcbooks.com/books/586765/i…
