So, @civilrightsorg just issued a report called "Democracy Diverted" civilrights.org/democracy-dive… that asserts that "the U.S. Supreme Court’s Shelby County v. Holder decision catalyzed a systemic examination of poll closures" in #Texas and other states. @TPPF /1
@civilrightsorg @TPPF Big problem w/ this broad-brush report as it sets out to find trouble in Texas and matches conclusions to verify it. The report admits that counties w/ the most polling place closures are large urban areas - problem is, Republicans don't control them. /2 @TPPF
@civilrightsorg @TPPF The report: "With 74 closures, Dallas County... is the second largest closer of polling places (in the nation), followed by Travis County... and Brazoria County... tied with Nueces County..." Ignoring the partisan context in this matter is material. /3
@civilrightsorg @TPPF In the remainder of the counties with polling place closures, a review shows them to be in largely rural counties - counties that are often losing population to the large urban centers. Makes no sense to maintain polling places serving few voters. /4
@civilrightsorg @TPPF I can't speak to the other states implicated in this report. But in Texas' case, that the aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Shelby County v. Holder decision resulted in a decline of voting places in areas controlled by Democrats undercuts the thesis. /End
