OṢO M'AALO
A mentor once told me, "you have become socially matured, if you still keep calm, when people who ask you to lend them money genuinely don't pay up. If you look carefully and they are sincere, you may want to give them additional aid, depending on your relationship."
If you are financially well off, when genuine friends ask you for a loan, look beyond the request to see if they are sinking and are actually asking you to throw them an achor.
Sometimes, "borrow me" is a term used for lack of a better expression, that protects our self esteem.
When I was a job seeker, I accumulated an irredeemable amount of debt in dereca of beans, cups of rice, maggi and schnapps bottle of palm oil with Iya Afeez, to the point I started crawling between cars, to sneak in and out, after I ran out of stories on when I will pay up.
There was a day she pretended like she didn't see me, allowed me sneak in, then came knocking. I hid as if I wasn't in the house, but she said loudly that she knows I'm in there. When I opened the door after she had gone, I saw a polybag filled with food stuff that she dropped.
We sat together this year at Afeez's wedding. We joked about it and I asked why she continued selling to me on credit when I couldn't pay. She said she knew a day like this would come. She said she understands how humans make commitment they can't keep in desperate situations.
This isn't about debt incurred on frivolity. I mean apparent cases where people lacked, while you have an opportunity to give a little, but you'd rather wait until they device means of getting from you by saying "borrow me."
Unashamedly our mothers are "borrow me" experts. 😀
Some of us, our forgiveness doesn't include debt forgiveness.
You haven't forgiven, if people owe you, then you see them in dire need, but choose to look away because of a previous debt. I will never forget that Iya Afeez left food at my door. Who are those on your blacklist?
