Maharaja Ranbir Singh, the 2nd Maharaja of #DograDynasty of #JammuAndKashmir was a consolidator & a patron of Sanskrit & builder of Temples. He is famous for Ranbir Penal Code & pioneering work in the field of postal services. He achieved unparalleled prosperity for his subjects.
Maharaja Ranbir Singh consolidated the vast state whose foundation was laid by his father Maharaja Gulab Singh. He re conquered #Gilgit, and subjugated Hunza, Nagar, Ponial & Yasin. He organized regular campaigns, to which almost every Dogra family contributed a soldier in 1860.
Maharaja Ranbir Singh introduced the postal & telecommunication services in the State in 1877, a telegraph service extended from Sialkot to Jammu to Kashmir. In 1882 services were extended to Gilgit & Skardu.
He treated all communities at par and he threw open the Jama Masjid at Srinagar for religious purposes which was closed during the Sikh Rule in 1820. He constructed a water duct for ablutions in the Mosque & contributed Rs 6000 for this noble cause.
Maharaja Ranbir Singh renovated the Jama Masjid in Srinagar. A committee was formed under Khwaja Rahim Shah, Gafoor Shah Naqashbandi and Azim Drabu to collect funds for this. W.R Lawrence considered him a role model Prince, blending religion & secularism.
A builder of Temples, he also set up Dharmarth Trust J&K. He also made contributions to Punjab University & set up Dharmshalas Haridwar, Varanasi & Rameshwaram.
He brought revolutionary changes in Education. He estd first printing press in the state & the Jammu and Kashmir Gazette was published for the first time in the Ranibir Printing Press. He donated to Sanskrit Pathshala at Benaras & set up Sanskrit Pathshala at Kashi.
He encouraged the development of #Dogri & est translation departments to translate books into Dogri. Books in Astronomy, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Zoology were printed in Ranbir Press to be distributed free to scholars of Govt schools, Pathshalas & Madarsas. @sp_sharma07
He donated 1 lac Rs to Punjab University Lahore & his Court had men from all over India, Pt Brij Lal of Jaipur, Rasmohan Bhattacharya from Bengal & Khalifa Noor ud Din of Qadian. Gem set sword gifted to King Edward VII by Maharaja Ranbir Singh.
