National Conference's demand for restoring posts of Wazir-e-Azam & Sadar-e-Riyasat in #Kashmir is untenable. #India came dangerously close to accepting pre-1953 in 1995 when PM Narasimha Rao said Congress was willing to concede "anything short of azadi".

Narasimha Rao's offer to restore Jammu & #Kashmir pre-1953 status was surreptitiously made from Burkina Faso. Nobody got the sinister implications of "anything short of azadi" except LK Advani who raised a storm. Rao had to retreat. One of the many reasons why Rao hated Advani.
PV Narasimha Rao is least remembered for the enormous damage he inflicted by sucking up to America and letting Robin Raphel, Pakistani agent in Clinton Administration, walk all over him. It was she who was running #Kashmir affairs in alliance with jihadi separatists.

1/ NEW WORKING PAPER on #InternetShutdown-s and protest in #India based on thousands of data points from 2016. Bottom line: shutdowns are followed by a clear *increase* in violent protest & have very ambiguous effects on peaceful demonstrations. #KeepItOn papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…
2/ India has recorded by far the highest number of shutdowns of any country in the 🌏 - a staggering 134 (per @NetShutdowns) just last year, largely in an attempt to quash protest. What this paper shows is that this kind of repression does not achieve what it sets out to achieve.
3/ I used data from @ACLEDINFO+@icews on 1000s of violent & non-violent events, teasing out categories of organizing parties. AFAIK this is the 1st statistical analysis of large-scale blackouts and offline dissent at this scale, in the country where they happen the most - #India.

#Breaking - Some defense sources report #Indian air strikes across the Line of Control in Muzafarabad, #Pakistan. Indian air force briefing expected later today. Pakistan said Indian jets dropped their payloads & "fled". More confirmation of details needed.
There are also reports of dual, air and ground Indian strikes in Pakistan occupied Jammu and Kashmir. No official word yet. Waiting for updates. Stay tuned.
There are also reports that 2 Pakistani JF-17s fighter jets have been shot down.

Let's get a few things straight.
Terrorism is not an act of 'cowardice' or 'desperation'. It is an act of cold-blooded terror. Politicians who keep repeating the same hackneyed lines are basically trying to avoid responsibility by disowning failure to crush terrorism. #Pulwama 1
It would be best if politicians representing the Government and the Opposition keep quiet after terrorist attacks. Anything they say is unadulterated bakwas. Nation is tired of glycerine tears for shahid jawans and insincere promises of retaliatory action. #Pulwama 2
Jammu & Kashmir is effectively under Central rule. Today's suicide bombing resulting in horrific deaths of jawans indicates an abysmal failure of intelligence agencies. Responsibility devolves on Modi Sarkar. Bluster cannot hide this fact. #Pulwama 3

Breaking: Large terrorist attack in #India. More than 40 Indian Reserve Police Force personnel were killed and many others injured when Pakistani backed terrorists targeted a convoy with a car bomb at Awantipora in Jammu and Kashmir's today, ndtv.com/india-news/15-…
Reports suggested that the vehicle used by the terrorists was a Mahindra Scorpio carrying more than 350 kg of explosives in what is the worst attack ever on security personnel in the state.
Sources said that terrorists triggered the car bomb while 78 vehicles with over 2,500 reserve police men were on the Srinagar-Jammu highway. The stretch on which the incident occurred had been sanitized in the morning & authorities called it a serious breach of security.
