If the record player answer becomes a big problem for Biden, it'll be because in all his previous gaffes this cycle his defenders could say "you know what he meant, don't quibble over his delivery." Not so much this time.
His answer was opaque. He didn't just misremember a name or trip himself up with phrasing—it was hard to figure out what he was actually trying to say. And a reasonable reading of what he WAS trying to say doesn't help him either.
"Record player" provides a jokey hook (which is also bad, because it give the gaffe legs). But this transcript, taken as a whole, is not something the Biden camp wants to be trying to explain or defend.
(Strip away everything else, and the core message of the "record player" stuff specifically was "poor people need to be instructed how to park their kids in front of electronics." That was the middle-class parenting CW twenty years ago, but it's pretty toxic today.)
"Black people are poor, poor people don't know how to parent, and good parents let Baby Einstein CDs raise their kids" is the essence of Biden's answer here. So "if you get past the phrasing, what he was actually saying is fine" isn't really an option this time.
