It seems odd that David Cameron was so surpised that the referendum turned into a Tory psychodrama given it was, erm, a means to defuse a Tory psychodrama.
Contrast this with Wilson: he knew the 75 referendum would be a Labour psychodrama and acted accordingly.

Cameron thought he could have a ref without any bloodlust. It was naive. Truth is it would have finished him (and changed Tory party) even if he'd won it narrowly.
Overall though interview seems candid and honest. For any politician but especially for a Conservative, the consequences of fundamentally destabilising your state (which whatever your view of Brexit has undoubtedly taken place) must be a hell of a thing to live with.

Lib Dem position (as just said by Swinson): "We must stop Brexit."

Of course, a Lib Dem majoirty govt is the preference.

But given that is highly unlikely, it is an odd position to deny yourself the option of supporting a govt which provides the only path to do that.
LDs are saying that both Johnson and Corbyn are Brexiters (a position articulated by Umunna yesterday).

Except one is quite literally offering a referendum to stop Brexit. And the other...well, isn't.
The LDs spent many years arguing that sometimes, in the national interest, you have to work with people you don't like or much approve of.

Given from their rhetoric I assume they believe Brexit is even more important than austerity, this seems a peculiar volte face.

Boris Johnson repeating something which has been rendered entirely inaccurate by events and his choices. He repeats the assertion that Parliament is only losing 4 sitting days.

Because Parliament was prorogued on Monday not Thursday or Friday last week, it’s lost 8-9 days.
And of course, given Parliament would have chosen to sit for at least some of the conf recess, probably much more than that.
He also says Parliament is in “recess.” It’s not, it’s prorogued. If it were just in recess it could undertake more business than it’s able to now it’s in prorogation.

So let me get this straight. The position of the PM is that he has not prorogued politically, that it’s absurd anyone suggests he has done so, it’s all about the need for a Queen’s Speech.

Yet...they’re considering proroguing politically. dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7…
The first time they had a reason to do it which might hold up in front of the Supreme Court. Unless they rule the govt can prorogue whenever it wants for whatever it reason it wants, this won’t hold up.
Consider the implications of that. A future government is about to lose a VONC, or lose on a key piece of legislation and the government could just prorogue it for as long as it likes to avoid its will.

Would be seriously dangerous territory.
