Starting off this #SIRC2019 session: Secondary Analysis of Longitudinal State-Level Support for Mental Health Services in School-Based Health Centers by Tatiana Bustos
Background: >20% of US youth experience mental health difficulties and of these, only 30% receive adequate care. Barriers include access and also quality of culturally relevant care #SIRC2019
School-based health centers help address barriers, especially in low-income areas. >70% of SBHCs offer some type of mental health service including referrals/screenings, grief loss therapy/counseling, crisis intervention, substance abuse counseling, family therapy and med mngmt
However, not all centers are equipped to provide these mental health services. Variations connect to context: structural characteristics (demographics, hrs of op, staffing size), networks/communication (partner/sponsorship), state-level support. #SIRC2019
To understand the variations, applied CFIR to external policy & incentives. State level support for funding, oversight, policy & standards. Used a survey to measure these variables. #SIRC2019
Funding: SBHC grant program, funding source, state agencies reported as funding source
Oversight: tech assistance, SBHC data collection
Policy: Operating standards & [missed this]
*[missed this] = state requirements for data collection
Respondents were state public health and medicaid office staff most knowledgable about state-level policies & funding related to SBHC #SIRC2019
Data measured at 4 time points. Relate frequencies for "state-level support" to the mental health services provided by SBHCs. Four main services: referrals, substance use, screening, medication #SIRC2019
Main findings: most outer context vars significantly related to all four MH services over time. State general funds were not related to substance use treatment or referrals. Great illustration (not attached here) for the relation of MH services with outer contexts. #SIRC2019
