/ This is just from recent years, about 2016–present. And these are just off the top of my head.

Oh #Singapore, my Singapore. 😰
/ Good afternoon! Looking back on this 💔 thread written in the early hours of the morning, I thought some things were worth adding that people might not have realised about #Singapore. Read on...
/ In “rule of law” #Singapore, when you are called in to be interrogated for an offence, you are not allowed to bring a lawyer. The law says you can have access to legal counsel within a reasonable time, but usually this is *after* interrogation.
/ Based on my own experience of interrogation, it’s just you and an officer in the room. I think they’ve introduced some video recording since, but my experience in 2017 was no recording. todayonline.com/singapore/vide…
/ I wasn’t allowed to video/audio record my own interrogation. I could write things down in a notebook, so I wrote down everything that was said. It slows things down, but better have some record than nothing, especially since they don’t give you a copy of the police statement.
/ Meanwhile, the police officer asked questions off a laptop and typed in my answers. Written statements are currently not taken verbatim. todayonline.com/singapore/vide…
/ After the interrogation, the officer prints out the statement and reads it back to you. You’re allowed to make any changes you want. And then you’re supposed to sign, which means you endorse the statement as accurate. (Again a reminder, you have no lawyer with you.)
/ Some offences are arrestable, which means that the police don’t need a warrant to search your premises or seize your belongings as evidence. In 2016 @royngerng and Teo Soh Lung has their homes raised and electronics confiscated on top of interrogation. No warrant necessary.
@royngerng PLUG BREAK: Since this thread seems to be getting attention, I'm using this opportunity to shamelessly plug @NewNaratif's upcoming democracy classroom in #Singapore, talking about minority rights and protection. Come join us! Pay-as-you-wish starts at S$1. eventbrite.sg/e/minority-rig…
