Latin/Carribean music comes from the African diaspora in the same way American music does. If Amara De La Negra (Black) & Yalitza Aparicio (Indigenous) haven’t showed u that lots of Latinx ppl are White, ur not paying attention. xxlmag.com/news/2019/09/f…
I adore JLo, but to say that she, Puerto Rican woman who HAS PLAYED a White Woman more than once, is black because you’re ignoring how race works is really wild in 2019. Say what you want about She’s Gotta Have It but they spent a WHOLE episode centering Black Puerto Ricans...
...IN Puerto Rico. Part of the reason the rest of the world is just finding out that Black Latinx folks even EXIST is BECAUSE White Latinx media AND White American Media are racist af & CENTER Latinx women like JLo. So when an Amara De La Negra makes it past the anti-black...
...anti-BW media gatekeepers, she’s gaslit by both American (Black & non) media AND Latinx Media. What could they possibly have in common to want to both, deny that black ppl exist AND ALSO take credit 4 what Black ppl have created in each of their cultures? We aren’t all black.
And that’s ok. But please. Stop. And yes, Black because of colonization,Black folks ARE a Rainbow people. It is absolutely possible to have a black abuela & do/don’t identify as Black. That’s the story for A LOT of ppl, Latinx or not. And for Island ppl, their ancestors...
...just like in the US, were Africans & Indigenous ppls. Know who else is in the equation? White Europeans. JUST LIKE IN THE US. If we know that being “American” does not determine your race, I wish folks would stop being so wrong about Latinx folks. Latinx is NOT ur race.
Blackness, both in the States and everywhere else in the world is also about how society treats you. Being White passing means society treats you not in the same way they would a “visibly” black person. That’s not shade becuz in the US, passing as White was against the law.
Even my own mother, a Black Puerto Rican Woman is lightskinned. Know who else is? My “regular black” (I hate that term but ya’ll know what I mean😂) ass Daddy. Booffem born & raised in Detroit Michigan. Black folks know us when we see us. Not all the time obviously & I’m ....
...making HUGE generalizations here. Everyone’s blackness is different & I none of us are in any position to Black Check anyone. Having said that, as a brown skinned black girl growing up going to Puerto Rican events, parades, theater groups with other Puerto Rican kids...
...I can tell you right now it was VERY obvious that me & my brother were “the Black kids” there. Whew especially in the summertime. So that “All Latinx ppl are Black” that’s bullshit & you know it. Now, Black & non-Black Latinx ppl (espc in the States) are connected. Bcuz...
...of racism. It was Black AND non-Black Latinx folks who created Hip Hop. We live in the same neighborhoods. Go to the same schools. That is absolutely true. And that’s something to be proud of. Espc in places like NYC, Texas, CA, etc. That’s what makes America so damn ...
...special. But you know you lyin saying all Latinx folks are black. We can party & do all that other shit w/o lyin 😂😂
ALSO, EYE HAVE BEEN IN HOLLYWOOD FOR 25 PLUS YEARS AND CANNOT TELL YOU HOW MANY TIMES I WAS TOLD I COULD NOT AUDITION FOR LATINX ROLES AND IT WASN’T CAUSE I DON’T SPEAK SPANISH. WE AIN’T ALL BLACK.
This convo is really complex & nuanced as well. While Anti-Black/Anti-Indigenous racism exists everywhere, there are lots of Latinx Ppl who are considered “White” in Latinx countries & come to the US & have a wake up call cuz they aren’t treated “White” here. But that’s more...
...about how “Whiteness” is both given & taken away in the States. Just like Italians & Irish weren’t always “White”. A good example is how 45 said that Latinx Republican dude a “Wasp”. Said he looked more Waspy than him, even tho he’s Latinx. 45 was stumped by that. So...
...even tho that whole ass White Man is & looks like a whole ass White Man, 45 was confused because...well because he’s an idiot. I’m rambling. Bottom line, lots of things exist & are true at the same time. We also are not all Black. Fin.
