Who wants to watch people launch into space today?

As you watch them walking in their spacesuits, the reason that they are bent over a little is because the suits are designed to be "comfortable" in something close to a fetal position.

I have been told that comfortable is relative.
We're twenty-seven minutes away from launch, so that gives us time to talk about a couple of historic aspects of this flight.

This is scheduled to be the last flight of the Soyuz-FG, which was designed to be a bridge between the Soyuz-U and the next generation Soyuz 2.

Me: I'd like a Manhattan, up.

Waiter: What vodka would you like with that?

Me: ...

Me: Why don't I just go to the bar?
Oh. Dear. God.

The bartender just brought me a Manhattan...

And a glass of vodka. A GLASS of vodka.

Apparently, the waiter told her I wanted vodka.

I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT IS HAPPENING.

(The actual Manhattan is good though.)
Ordered a Manhattan again, same hotel bar. This time, it came out and was so appallingly bitter that I asked the waitress what the drink was.

I later found out that Vodka boy, from the first night, was behind the bar because the regular bartender had gone home sick.

Also, SERIOUSLY? This is my least favorite category of negative review.

Men do not have to be tortured monsters. They don't have to be broody. THEY CAN BE SUPPORTIVE.

This is not the same as perfect. Look. I get what fiction has fed you.
Fiction has fed you a diet of men who are controlling stalkers, and portray that as love.

They offer you men who need to be healed by the love of a good woman.

They think that conflict means fighting and that fighting means passion.

So I was flying home on Wednesday and my flight was delayed - but I can't get over how well my pilot handled it. It was a masterclass in empathetic leadership.

Right as we were about to board, he came out of the plane and made an announcement over the PA:
"Folks, unfortunately there's a weather system over SFO, and air traffic control isn't letting us take off for another few hours". He talked for a few min about how arrival capacity is reduced, how we'll be landing on a non-standard runway, and how ATC is managing the situation.
'What we need to do is have everyone on the plane by 8:40pm - that gives us two hours to hang out, but if we aren't on the plane by then, we'll miss our scheduled takeoff time given to me by SF controllers. You can go grab a drink, but be sure you're back before then!'

I did something similar to this 5 years ago, in anticipation of EC & @theroots' Wise Up Ghost LP, on tumblr.

(You can still find all those posts if you look, although a lot of the YouTube links etc are now dead ends. It was 40 Days Of EC then, so for 2018 I'm upping it to 45.)
Mostly I will be going chronologically from the early years right up to the present, but it feels right to start out with Costello's 2002 song, "45."
