So where do things stand with the evictions of illegal squats in Athens - families & children who were settled in schools & making every effort to integrate were removed without warning & bused to locations far away from their networks in Athens
The children, who had been attending Greek schools, were removed from their residences & schools with no warning & no measures to enroll them in other schools. Info I have is that some families were taken from Athens to tents in Corinth
Tents in the rain & mud, no certainty, their attempts to have a stable life & join in with Greek society were quite literally thrown into the street & shamed by the state via pics of their dwellings
The squats were illegal, we all know that. The people who lived there knew that & would have preferred a legal option. But there wasn't one, because the camps are all dismal & full. So they were removed & images of their dwellings splashed across the Greek media.
How awful! Look at the state they were living in! Let me tell you, if a Greek media crew burst through my front door right now, unannounced, the pics might look pretty similar. But to the people who lived there, that was home & better than a tent for sure
And in all of this, a general radio silence. Editors who won't take the story, a public that doesn't really care any more. Children who lost the roof over their heads & should be in school right now & instead are pictured sobbing as they're uprooted yet again
So the question is, what can be done? I feel hopeless in the face of this, but I instinctively have always tried to find hope against the odds. These are real people with lives, dreams. But they have no voice. The media can be that voice. So do you want to tell their story?
