This has me thinking. Card analogy breaks down.

You deal yourself most of your own hand.
First, you need to analyze the playing field - understand the rules, and what your objective is. What is the "Win" condition, what are the "Lose" conditions
Then, map it out

Things you control | Things you don't

Items on the left will be more numerous.
The "hand you're dealt" only refers to things that fall into the right column. And that doesn't even say anything about whether or not you can turn those things you can't control to your advantage (I guess that's what playing the hand means)
In other words, the things you're stuck with (your hand) form an utter minority of the total # of variables. It's unlikely that those things will rule out achievement of the Win condition. But figuring out how to win is on you.
You can't change the rules - but you can pick the game, you can pick your objectives, and you can pick new cards to add to your baseline hand.

Assume control.
