"In early 2019, Lutsenko’s position as prosecutor general was under threat after Zelenskiy -- who was then heavily ahead in the polls -- promised to remove him if elected president."
Leshchenko and the other official said Lutsenko had then sought out Giuliani in a desperate bid to try to enlist the Trump administration in the hope it would somehow protect him.
"We understood that he was just trying to protect his position in the new administration using this scandal," Leshchenko said. "And he put Ukraine on this battlefield."

I think Al Gore's comparison between current climate movement to nuclear freeze movement in the 1980s is quite astute. That movement was widely mocked as unserious or hysterical etc by people who were (falsely) infatuated with their own seriousness.
But the freeze movement accomplished something that was as civilizationally important as almost anything at the time: they created the conditions to revese the logic of the nuclear arms race and helped move Reagan 180 degrees on arms control.
It's the nature of these things that all the people who were wrong never actually admit it or pay the price and we'll be lucky if that's where we end up with climate.

They want to have safety, dignity, not to have to fear for their families, food, water. They're not demons, vicious animals, or parasites - just desperate people suffering greatly. They aren't coming here out of malice against us. They're just humans who want to to survive.
Our government has dehumanized these people. They demonize their motives, so much so that we act as though they: women, children, men, the elderly - deserve to suffer. Instead of just deriding them let's consider:

Trump said again that he "got" the Veterans Choice program, and John McCain couldn't. John McCain wrote the Choice bill with Bernie Sanders. That bill was passed in 2014 and signed by Obama. Trump signed a law, the VA MISSION Act, that changes the Choice program.
For the 11th time, Trump said he got 52% of the women's vote in 2016. It was 52% of the *white* women's vote, according to exit polls; 41% of all women.
