I don't pay attention to science-flavored doomsday predictions. Why? Because none of them ever, ever come true.

1524 We're all gonna die when the planets line up
1910 We're all gonna die when Halley's Comet poisons the atmosphere
1919 We’re all gonna die when the Sun explodes...
1982 We’re all gonna die when the planets line up
1999 We’re all gonna die when the new millennium arrives
2003 We're all gonna die when the planets line up
2008 We’re all gonna die when the Large Hadron Collider makes black holes...
2011 We're all gonna die when Comet Elenin slams into Earth
2012 We're all gonna die when the Mayan calendar runs out

Humanity: *relieved chuckle* Oh, well. Guess those predictions were a bit silly.

2019 We're all gonna die when climate change kills us
And like apocalyptic preachers, climate doomsayers tell us the world will end in 12 years. Do you know how many times we've been told that it's X years until "time runs out"? And when that fails to happen, like those apocalyptic preachers, they just change the doomsday date.
How many times does this need to happen before you ignore these predictions?

Scientific ideas ideally progress through from hypothesis to theory. A hypothesis is a possible explanation for some observed phenomena. Its most important feature is that it makes testable predictions. If those predictions are validated through repeated experiment...
...the hypothesis eventually graduates to theory.

The word "theory" confuses a lot of people, because it's used in a multitude of ways.* Most commonly, it's used to express an untested, unverified idea someone's come up with to explain something he's observed.
e.g. "I have this theory that mice are actually superintelligent and are performing experiments on US." Obviously, that's just a wild idea that hasn't been scientifically tested. That's not at all what scientists mean by the word "theory," and is much more like a hypothesis.

Here's Dawkins’ commentary on why people are compelled by the fine-tuning argument. Well, let’s engage in some consciousness-raising of our own about probabilities.
The monkeys-on-typewriters analogy is often used to explain how, given enough time and space, random processes can lead to extremely improbable events. But how much time and space are we talking about in the observable universe? Turns out, it's surprisingly little.
Let’s look at the probability of a large but finite number of monkeys randomly typing on keyboards happening to produce something intelligible. Say, the famous first line of Charles Dickens’ classic, A Tale of Two Cities: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.”

This is Earth from about 4 billion miles away, taken by Voyager 2 in 1990. The Pale Blue Dot, as Carl Sagan called it. For many, this image inspired a deep sense of humility about our place in the cosmos. For some, that sense of humility led to feelings of insignificance.
How could a thin film of life on an infinitesimal speck of dust, floating in a vast and endless universe, have any meaning? It was almost like discovering that life was a cosmic joke and the inevitable extinguishing of it all was the punchline.
When I taught general astronomy in university, I handed out questionnaires on the first day, asking among other things what my students' greatest philosophical concerns were in terms of astronomy, because I wanted to tune the course to their particular needs.

1/ Mariee Juárez was only 21 months old when she died after being held in Dilley Family Detention Center in Texas.

She was a healthy child.

A happy child.

She and her mother fled the violence of Guatemala.

Mariee died on US soil, of medical neglect.

First of the #TrumpSeven:
2/ Mariee at 19mos and her mom entered the US along our Mexico border on March 1 2018, and were transferred to Dilley FOUR days later…

Not THREE as legally mandated.

They were put in a cell with 5 other mothers and their kids, some of whom were sick. Especially one little boy.
3/ By March 11, 2018 — under a week after being imprisoned in a Dilley camp cell — Mariee had an “acute upper respiratory infection,” diagnosed by a physician’s assistant at Dilley.

She was prescribed honey packs and Tylenol.

She did not get better. 💔

This has (no surprise!) become the week's most "shocking!" ammunition a/g the "other" side, which, fair, and we cannot be expected to pay attention to the heated minutiae of every city. But this has far from come out of the blue. Portland has been priming for this for years...
The city, since I've been here (2004), has beamed to the world an image of itself as a place of inclusion, of tolerance, a place to live your ideals and set a place at the table for every citizen. Utopia always contains the poison pill, and around 2011, it started to leach...
I ran a reading series that year. A group of women sat in the back, knitting and talking loudly and over the reader, a designer who mentioned yellow was a hard color for most people to wear. One knitter started screaming the woman was a racist. I was flummoxed. I'm not anymore.

This class will span 21/01/2019 to 07/02/2019.

We will be having classes four times a week.

I have my issues🤷‍♀️! I always wanted to prove myself & make my family proud(2nd child). A pressure that was just in my head; they were always proud of us. I wanted to grow up to be a doctor or an army officer like my dad. Let's just say I changed my mind! #VoicesIWS @IWS_Network
