You know what would restore trust in democracy? Boris Johnson addressing the nation and admitting that what he and the Leave campaigned for was undeliverable, that since then he has deliberately stoked a sense of betrayal as a means of gaining power, and that he is deeply sorry
Not very likely, I grant you - but as I say, I’m convinced it would restore trust in politics. We could all heal and move on
Anyway, not “delivering Brexit”: that’s not the thing that’ll restore trust in democracy
A significant proportion of Leave voters voted the way they did because they were told that Brexit would be great. Absolute best case it’ll be a bit shit
There is no version of Brexit that will fulfil all the promise and expectations generates by the Leave campaign. When faced with its reality, that’s when voters will really feel betrayed

Today’s announcement that Boris Johnson *will* comply with Benn act by requesting A50 extension completes an elaborate kabuki performance aimed at Tory Brexiters & Brexit Party voters to signal:
- he really wanted to leave on 31/10
- “Remain Parliament” prevented this happening
Johnson & Cummings are utterly reprehensible, cynical, egotistical individuals - but not stupid. They always knew there’d have to be an extension; but their electoral strategy depends on convincing Brexiters they were determined to leave “do or die” but thwarted by Remainers
“Look: we’d just put forward a generous compromise & told the Europeans it was our final offer. But despite our warnings the Remoaners undermined us by forcing an extension. No wonder the EU rejected our offer! So let’s extend as they wanted - voters can decide who’s to blame!”

If you’re genuinely opposed to political violence, the correct response to ppl on *your* side threatening violence if they don’t get their way isn’t to tell the *other* side to give in. It’s to tell the thugs: “No: threatening violence is never OK, even if you feel frustrated.”
Here’s a more detailed thread I did a while back in response to a Sun article shamefully invoking the death of Jo Cox to support their argument that we should all just get behind Brexit
This was over two years ago. Don’t let anybody tell you that these threats and warnings of rioting, if Brexit is stopped or delayed, are a recent development

Labour Remainers on Twitter seem quite upset with the LibDems for coming out in favour of revoking Article 50
“How dare LibDems offer a Brexit policy that is closer to what many voters want, thereby sabotaging our electoral strategy of trying to keep voters who want more than we’re offering in our tent by gaslighting them that they have to vote for us cos what they want isn’t on offer?”
I like Paul Mason a lot. He’s basically a sound bloke. But this is desperate stuff motivated by the fact that Labour see their divine-right claim on all anti-Brexit voters evaporating. Are we expected to believe that another EUref *won’t* be portrayed as an insult to 17m voters?

Thread: There’s an insidious argument that it is automatically “un-conservative” to oppose anything that has been baked into the British political landscape for more than a couple of decades. Hence Brexit is supposedly a sign of the Tories being irresponsibly revolutionary. /1
Now, I’m the last one to disagree with the notion that this government has been (and continues to be) cavalier and irresponsible in flirting with a disruptive No Deal Brexit, which was certainly not the Brexit which I and many others campaigned and voted for. /2
But the lazy idea being bandied around by journalists, commentators and others (@sullydish has a slightly more measured take) is that Brexit is inherently un-conservative. Which sounds pleasing until you actually stop and properly think about it. /3
