Ignoring Trump’s conduct isn’t just a political choice, it’s a choice to shirk the foundations of American government for partisan gain. It’s precedent-setting. If the conduct’s written off, future presidents will be wholly unaccountable to the basic demands of honest government.
Which demands of honest government? The demand that officials not conceal information from the public about its operation; that officials serve to promote the country’s interests instead of their own; & that foreign interference in our affairs not be covertly or overtly welcomed.
The Framers knew well the dangers of having someone like Trump in the Oval; someone unmoored from the traditional commitments to decency and honor that many of our earliest leaders held. Here’s Hamilton’s dire warning about the consequences of ignoring behavior like Trump’s:
