A bit late to this, but a very interesting article. The feared mass movement of white-collar jobs overseas never happened. Ben Casselman suggests that they just moved to lower-cost locations in the US 1/ nytimes.com/2019/09/27/bus…
But even that seems not quite right. Big, high-cost metropolitan areas have been adding jobs *faster* than smaller, low-cost cities, which seems odd given the growth of telecommuting 2/ nytimes.com/2019/09/20/rea…
The key to the paradox may be that telecommuting lets companies move *some* jobs to low-cost locations — but that actually encourages concentration of other jobs in places where proximity matters. Hence the re-urbanization of corporate headquarters 3/ nytimes.com/2016/08/02/bus…
Did I mention how much I love economic geography? It's intellectually stimulating, sometimes leads to surprising insights, and relates directly to stuff we can all see around us 4/
