BREAKING: ICE emptied out Karnes today. Hundreds of women were transferred to different detention centers in rural areas around the country. These include dozens of women who the GEO Group, under the direction of ICE, has failed to provide adequate medical attention to.

The women may not be locked up in the same detention center right now but many of them continue to suffer from illnesses and injuries made worse by their time in Karnes.

Here's a story told to us by woman who may have a limp for life because of lack of medical care provided:
"On June 9 I was apprehended in Rio Grande, my left foot ligaments broke, & I suffered a bone fissure in the calf part of my leg. That happened when I was walking to the CBP patrol car. My foot bent three times until I heard something snap.
I told the officer that I was not able to walk but he forced me to stand up & keep walking to the truck. When I arrived to the hielera (freezing cold room), I told them that I was not able to walk and my ankle and calf were swollen. They took me to the health center...
The nurse there checked my foot and leg, and just wrapped my foot with a bandage & gave me a painkiller.

I was at the hielera for 16 days (this is way too long to be living in a freezing cold cell), and then I was transferred to a perrera (kennel) for ten days.
I was then transferred to McAllen detention center where I was for 24 hrs. After that I was finally transferred to Karnes, where I have been since June 28 (until today). Almost 4 days after I arrived at Karnes I was in a lot of pain and went to the doctor at the facility.
When I arrived, I told them I needed something for the pain because my foot was hurting a lot. They then put me in a room & checked my leg; it was still bruised. They did not physically checked my foot; they just gave me a pair of crutches and an ibuprofen pill.
They told me that if the pain kept going I needed to drink water.

I was in crutches for 16 days and then taken to hospital. They did an x-ray but nothing else. 15 days later I was brought to the health center. They told me that I broke my left foot ligaments and a bone fissure.
They said I needed to keep using the crutches and put on an anklet. I used crutches for 5 more days until I could not use them anymore because my armpit was hurting. Until this day I can’t walk properly, I limp a lot. I can’t twist my foot. The movement I’m doing is v limited.
I know that if I would have better medical treatment at this facility I would have been able to walk correctly & would not suffer the pain I’m suffering right now."

Does this treatment sound to you like a place children should be incarcerated?
And ICE continues with their plans to bring families back to Karnes, ignoring calls from multiple Members of Congress, remember that previously when families were held there, we were able to provide them with legal support but they blocked this access: nbcnews.com/news/latino/tr…
As they bring children back into a prison that is unable to take care of adults, let alone children, are they going to deny these children the legal protections that existed previously & medical care?

If you care, please tweet @ICEgov and tell them what you'd like them to do.
