There’s going to be huge interest in the legal text and the speech today but we shouldn’t lose sight of the truly big change this week. Boris Johnson and the Brexiters have admitted their form of Brexit necessitates checks in Ireland after years of dismissing it as nonsense.
It is the latest in a long line of things discussed in the referendum campaign, dismissed as project fear (remember when no deal was an impossibility?) which go from breezy dismissal to Brexiter received wisdom in no intervening period whatsoever.
Only a year ago, Theresa May at the Conservative Party Conference promised frictionless trade to Irish border communities “these things matter to you- so they matter to me.”
