Startups can learn a lot by using surveys to test their ideas, but most of them do such bad survey design that the results are almost useless. Since I do a lot of survey research, I thought it might be worth sharing some tips for getting started with surveying for startups. 1/5
First, you need a good population to survey. Many startups start by surveying your family & friends. This is a bad idea that causes bias. One easy way to get a better sample of consumers in Mechanical Turk. This study shows MTurk is a pretty good source, and offers some tips. 2/5
You also have to ask good questions! Bad question design will lead to bad data, plus lots of people giving up on the survey. This is a nice guide to designing good questions. 3/5 stripe.com/atlas/guides/s…
One important thing many startups want to learn about is pricing, but you can’t just ask people what they will pay. The gold standard approach is conjoint analysis, but it can be challenging. Though less accurate, a Von Westendorp approach is easier. 4/5 5circles.com/van-westendorp…
Finally, remember to test your surveys in advance! Start with face-to-face walkthroughs & then small samples. And use validated instruments (👇) when you can, since you can compare results with other surveys! 5/5
