Maybe this is obvious to everyone else, but it just hit me that while Trump is almost certainly going to be the nominee next year, if he isn't, he's absolutely going to do everything in his power to destroy whoever is—and whoever in the party he believes betrayed him.
Pence could maybe somehow possibly win at the top of the ticket if Trump went quietly, but since Trump won't go quietly, the GOP has to anticipate a total shellacking in 2020 if they take him out—up and down the ballot.
